Should I Water My Plants Today?

Answer a few questions about what you can see and feel. No weather apps or soil meters needed.

Step 1 of 4 — What type of plant are you checking?

Plant type

Why does my plant need water today?

Overwatering is the most common cause of houseplant death. Most plants are killed by too much water, not too little. The safest approach is to check observable conditions before reaching for the watering can.

Our tool checks four signals plants actually use to tell you they're thirsty:

  • Soil moisture — the 2-inch finger test is the most reliable single indicator
  • Time since last water — most houseplants need 48–72 hours minimum between waterings
  • Environmental stress — heat above 88°F, low humidity, and strong wind all increase water demand
  • Visible stress signs — drooping or limp leaves mean the plant is telling you directly

Outdoor plants like shrubs and wildflowers also factor in recent rainfall. If it rained in the last 48 hours (≥0.25 inches), most established outdoor plants don't need supplemental watering.

How often should I water my plants?

There is no universal answer. Instead of watering on a fixed schedule, use the conditions-based approach above. As a rough guide:

  • Houseplants in pots: Every 7–14 days, depending on pot size and season
  • Outdoor shrubs: Every 7–10 days in summer; weekly during establishment
  • Wildflowers / seedlings: Every 2–5 days until established; less once roots reach deep soil

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I water my succulent or cactus today?

Only water a succulent or cactus when the soil is completely dry and at least 7–14 days have passed since the last watering. Hot, dry weather that stresses tropical plants does not mean a succulent needs water sooner. Mild wrinkling or softening of leaves is the most reliable signal.

What happens if I water when the soil is still wet?

Watering over wet soil deprives roots of oxygen and creates conditions for root rot — the leading cause of houseplant death. Always check 2 inches down before watering. If it feels wet or cool, skip and check again in 1–2 days.

Do outdoor plants need water after it rains?

Most established outdoor shrubs and wildflowers do not need supplemental watering for at least 48 hours after significant rainfall (≥0.25 inches). Young seedlings may still need water if the rain was light. Our tool factors in recent precipitation when giving outdoor recommendations.
